Boxelder Tree Identification This maple tree has a brown bark trunk and its lumber is distinctively softer weaker and lighter than the majority of maples. Boxelder Acer negundo is one of the most widespread and best known of the maples. The boxelder is not an economically important tree as its wood is too soft for structural applications.
